Shocked, awed & screwed

Okay, so here’s the deal: we CANNOT ever hope for our governments and intelligence agencies to save our skin. Let’s just accept that once and for all. The netas and their officers are either too busy making each other richer to stay in power, or are simply inefficient, or are too politically motivated to do anything concrete (the Congress, for instance, would never do anything to flush out terror agents in our midst at the risk of hurting its so-called minority vote bank). Or it’s a combo of all these.

From hereon, it’s each man and woman for his/her own. We have to protect ourselves. And make caution a part of our daily lifestyle, our DNA. So at any public place, we have to keep a sharp eye on suspicious objects and suspicious people. At the slightest of doubt, we have to raise an alarm. Be it a suspicious character on a bus-ride, or the package lying unattended on the stray bicycle. There will be a million false alarms, but no matter.

In a sting operation I did for the Mirror last year, on the ann of the Bombay train blasts, I was shocked to find no one bothered to stop me when I left my bag behind in buses, trains and malls. This apathy simply has to go, there is no option.

Just as staring hard at pretty women, jumping queues, spitting and pissing in public places has become a part of our persona, so must the habit of exercising caution. I am changing this aspect of myself, and so must you. Good luck, mate!

it's unfortunate and shameful. A handful of terrorists can plant bombs and detonate them whenever they so wish, in our own backyard. when our netas are busy buying each other out.

action should be merciless. All these 'gandi nali ke keede' should be dealth with an iron fist. The netas shouldnt be afraid of hurting minority sentiments. And the minorities ahould understand it's in the national interest.

Terrorists detonate bombs, naxals kill greyhounds, soldiers killed in J&K. Are we becoming a nation of chhakkas?

It's about the security of India, it's people. All political parties should come together and vow to wipe out this menace. Once and for all.

What security you are talking about? Kennedy, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi,Benejit Bhutto were all given security. Could it make them live one minute longer? If people have learnt to live with the idea, what is wrong with it? One can be as cautious as possible, Kaal apna khel khel hi jaata hai. That is why we have sayings like 'vinaash kaal vipreet budhi' ' gadhe ki maut ati hai to shehar ki taraf jaata hai'

gosh i have stopped watching tv...i am constantly reminded about what happened in bombay in 93...now i live in bangalore and a bomb explodes at a bus stop near my house...should i be scared????....i am disgusted...noone cares this will just go on and on and on. 2 years back at bombay airport i informed the cops about a plastic bag which had 2 boxes in it. i waited to see what they will do...they laughed, scratched thier body parts....not one came over and looked at it...so we can be vigilant but what happens when we do find something ...the jerks do nothing??? i went over to the main police at the airport and they told be to catch my flight and not bother about it???? mind you i was parading the airport with 2 small kids bcoz i cared but all the other passengers around me did not bother...wake up everyone...citizens, police and you bloody netas....

hi jenny,
you have a point: what must we do when no action gets taken on our discovery of suspicious looking objects? one, raise an alarm... scream and shout so that people move away. two, split the scene as fast as possible. three, establish contact with the cops and hope some action gets taken.
yes, i am aware, one cud be raising false alarms and needlessly scaring others. well, better to be alarmed and stressed than blown to smithreens, right?

And why some political parties are hell bent on abolishing the TADAs, POTAs and other such stringent measures that can curb terrorism to some extent. Some will argue, human rights violations. I ask, what about the human lives violations? The netas are weakening a nation just to appease minority sentiments and win vote banks. Sad and infuriating.

yeah anil...if i did not have my kids woth me i would have kicked them in the buttt. i would also like to add that we as citizens must coperate with all the security checks and not argue with the cops when they r doing their job...recently at a amll in bangalore a couple began argueing with the security as they did not want to open a brief case which they were carrying...we all shouted fron behind not to allow them in and then they relented...yeah so i guess screaming works!!!

that was a truly soul searching article u wrote there sir..!! all of u fellow bloggers who have replied back too...i agree with most of u.

just feel particularly bad that all the nation's security is being wasted on securing the safety of our netas rather than us junta whom they were originally meant for.

another thing..we all read in papers abt the army acquiring so many different weapons..fancy fighter crafts...developing/buying this missile and that missile..
for wat use???!! some kind of show piece decoration?? shudnt we "use" them at the enemy country which is harbouring and sending into our country all those terrorists??!!
