The Black-lash

Let me clarify a few things, since Aamir’s comments on Black have blown into a full-fledged controversy in the media. In my interview with Aamir for the Mumbai Mirror (here’s the link), the actor was simply reacting to a specific question on Sanjay Bhansali’s much revered and much awarded blockbuster. That question wasn’t pre-planned, it became part of a freewheeling conversation as we went along. So let’s be clear and immediately kill any suggestion that Aamir was using the interview to get at Bhansali.

Two, although I have the highest regard for Mr Bachchan (I grew up on his cinema), I do believe there was absolutely no need to deride Aamir for his comments on Black, I daresay it was a tad unbecoming of an actor of his caliber and stature. We are all entitled to our views on stuff that falls in public domain, and we must accept that there will be people who don’t agree with our work. I felt disappointed that our dear Big B reacted so strongly to comments made by an actor so many years junior to him. And I will make it a point to mention this to him when I have the good fortune of meeting Mr Bachchan next.

Incidentally, for what it’s worth, I do agree with Aamir. Black left me cold and unmoved, which was a shocker. A film loaded with an emotional story, that of a girl who is dumb, deaf and blind should have tugged at the heartstrings. And I think it’s gotta to do with the totally clinical and antiseptic way the film was directed… there was zero soul in the film. And it’s not that I have suddenly formed this opinion, these were my exact comments in a column in Sunday Mid Day soon after the film’s release.

Hi Anil. I remember reading your opinion about Black in Mid Day soon after the film's release (as it - along with that of Mr Raja Sen - stood out in the sea of plaudits). I liked Black upon first viewing, but couldn't bear to sit thru the second when all the pretence and melodrama became obvious. Can't stand the over-the-top performances in the first half, and some very obviously manipulative sequences in the second.
I agree it was unbecoming of Mr Bacchhan to react in such a way, and i respect you for this opinion - i don't how many people can say that.

Hi Anil,

I personally didn't liked the film and also didn't liked some of Aamir films too like raja hindustani (too loud ,melodramatic boring, mangal pandey list goes on )as well as( Amitabhs again lambi list) .but i doubt you for certain things. my point is "why did the statement on black made a headline on the front page".Black is not that great film and every one of us is entitled to our opinion but again there are people who didn't liked chak de(honestly , it was mother of all cliches ).Opinions are subjective .Also the ---day and -----of india papers don't like Bachchans , it's quite clear and even the public knows about it, you scrutinize them for everything but are in full support of the entire 'khandaan'.How did you forget to ask Aamir about his 'farmer' status.

"So let’s be clear and immediately kill any suggestion that Aamir was using the interview to get at Bhansali."-- no way , it smells fishy and now see TZP lash out ...

Hi Anil,
It would be great if you can immediately call up Mr. Bachchan and convey AAMIR's latest post on BLACK and on AB as well as your this opinion - sort of damage control if you wish.

Thank you for posting this - it's well needed.

I'm surprised at Mr. B, no one knows more than him how quickly the media will jump and feed off those sort of comments.

No problem on Amir's comments.. I tend to agree that black is not a great film... but why make these comments when ur film is about to release... black released 3 years ago... why give ur opinion now ??... reason? PUBLICITY for a small film like TZP... And if Aamir wanted to give a no holds barred interview... why not talk about "YASH CHOPRA and DARR" issue... Just because that may affect his future films with yashraj... Amir Khan just like others is hypocrite... Look how suddenly he changed his stance and started giving media interviews because he wanted publicity for filme that he produced... For fanah/RDB producers did the publicity.. so he did not have to worry about the publicity... well no one is perfect but Aamir acts as if he is perfect.... one word.. pretentious

hi satya,
you could be right in your views on many issues, but the truth is that i started the conversation on bhansali, aamir only followed up on it. whether he used the line of questioning to promote his own film, i have no idea.
however, let it be told, he did not comment on black without me first specifically, pointedly asking his views on it.
thanks
anil

I am not at all interested in what one says about the other and how the other reacts. Would either of them have allowed their children to act in films. To subject a children to such traumatic acting is akin to robbing them of innocence. It is absolutely wrong. But then, they both are actors and are working for money. And the activists are silent. There should be censorship on the type of roles played by children.
